Dear parents,
Welcome back. This is going to be a very exciting term for us as we prepare ourselves for the start of the building work.  This has already started with the removal of the mobile that was in front of our main gates.  Over the next few weeks we will be making changes within school, which will mean classes moving around.  We will keep you up to date on what is happening.
New building meeting
Next Tuesday 15th June there will be a meeting in school all about the new building.  Come along and see what the new building will look like and ask any questions you may have.

Spaghetti Challenge
As part of our science week, we would like to invite you to come and have a go at the ‘Spaghetti Challenge’. It is on Thursday 16th June at 3.30pm until 4.00pm. We would love to see you.

TESCO VOUCHERS FOR SCHOOLS  FINAL DAY  15th of JUNE
Tuesday the 15th of June is the final day for collecting this years Tesco vouchers.
Please send any you have by this date. Thank you for all of you who have brought in your vouchers. We have collected 3500 vouchers so far!

Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic book fair is at school until Wednesday 26th May. The book fair is taking place in the school library from 3.00pm-3.30pm. There is a wide range of books for ages 2-12 and prices are from 99p. Every book you buy helps us to earn free books for the school library and classroom.

All Parents
As part of  book fair week we are inviting parents into classrooms to share the lovely reading books we have in school and then to pop along to the book fair to look at the new books we have for sale.
Reception Parents are welcome from 2.30pm on  Monday 24th of May.

Homework
Please remember that if you have any queries about homework and would like assistance of any kind Mrs Heffernan is available in the library every Friday from 3pm.
Lexia
If your child is on the Lexia programme at school and you would like to access this at home please see Mrs Heffernan or leave a message at the office and she will get back to you.
Maths
Would you like to know how to help your child to use a numberline?  This has become a big part of mathematics teaching and if you would like to know how we do it please come to the library any Friday at 3pm.

New school
There will be a meeting at school on Tuesday 18th May for you to come along and see the ‘almost’ finalised plans for the new school.  We are moving along very quickly to the start of the building work, which is likely to be the beginning of July.

P.E.
All children must wear the P.E. uniform (shorts, t-shirt, plimsolls) when doing P.E.  We have noticed this week that a number of children still do not have their P.E. kit in school.  Please ensure that your child brings their kit to school on Monday.

Dersinga Island Project
We have started an exciting topic this term.  Ask your children where they are living on ‘Dersinga Island’.

Bike Building Project
We have had a lot of enquiries regarding the Bike Building Project.
Unfortunately this project is not open to all children. The project is funded for 12 children using the Pathfinder Subsidy Funding and these children have already been selected for this academic year. We would like to thank all the parents who have encouraged their children to take part in all our out of school learning activities.

Marie Curie and Helping Haiti
The final total for Marie Curie was £450.22 and you raised £117.38 for Helping Haiti.  Thank you very much for all your donations.

Home Access Grant
Home Access is the Government programme which will help to ensure that more children in state-maintained education in England have access to technology at home to support learning.  The programme was developed out of recognition that there are still a significant number of learners who lack access to a computer and the internet at home.  The programme aims to provide funding to over 270,000 households by March 2011.  For more information about this scheme please go to www.becta.org.uk/homeaccess

Homework

There has been a vast improvement in homework returns this term.  Last term there were 46 children who did not return homework, this term this number has dropped to 22, a massive thank you to all of you.  The parents of the children who did not return homework will or course receive a letter asking if we can help in any way.   A huge thank you to class 8 and 5 parents, each and every child has returned their homework.   If you do have any queries about homework please pop in to see Mrs Heffernan in class 7 on a Friday after school.

Marie Curie
Thank you to everyone who sent sponsor money in for Marie Curie.  We have so far raised £376.66.  The last day for sending sponsor money is next Wednesday 24th March.  I hope the pots of daffodils all reached home safely.  The winner of the best decorated pot was Urwah in Class 9.

Free Computer Course
We are running a free computer course for parents, grandparents and carers at Dersingham Infant School, every Wednesday morning from 9.15 to 11.15am. The course will start on Wednesday 10th March 2010 and will run for 4 weeks only.
Do come along and learn about basic computing, keyboarding, emailing and surfing the net for websites that help to improve children’s English and Maths skills
Everyone who attends the course will receive a certificate at the end of the 4 weeks training.

Parents Tea & Coffee Afternoons
The session will take place on Tuesday afternoons as requested by parents who attended our coffee mornings.
Do come and meet other parents, share ideas or just come and relax with a cup of tea or coffee every Tuesday afternoon from 2 – 3pm.

Family Learning Project
Certificates will be presented to Parents, Children and Grandparents who have attended the Free English Language Classes at Dersingham on Monday afternoons.
Please come to the presentation ceremony next Monday 1st March 2010 to collect your certificate.

English Week – 1st March 2010

Listed below are the different activities during English week this year.  We hope you will be able to join us in these celebrations.

Ask your child who their favourite book character is, make a costume for them.   The costumes will be judged on creativeness and not how much the costume cost!

Children will be making their own ‘picture book’ throughout the week.  You can support your child by reading as many ‘picture books’ with them as possible.

Your child will bring home a £1 token for a book.  World book day publishes special books for £1 or you can use this token towards buying a more expensive book.

The children will be making puppets and re-telling a traditional tale with their friends.
We hope you will support us in celebrating English Week.

   Homework

From analysing the termly parental questionnaire it has suggested we increase the volume of homework.  So for this term only, we will be sending out both literacy and numeracy homework each week, for year 2.  You will of course be able to let us know how you feel the homework has gone in our termly questionnaire.

Library
Due to the library being used as a temporary classroom, your child will not be bringing home a library book.  As soon as the Reception children have their permanent classroom the library will run as normal.  Please do not forget we have a parent/child library in the hall every Monday and Friday evening.  There is a selection of story books, dual language books and games to borrow.

Homework

I would like to thank all the parents for attending homework club, it is good to see so many parents supporting their children and school. It has been proven many times that children make far more progress when home and school work together supporting each other.  Can I please reiterate that homework club is for parents to attend with their children and for the teacher to support parents in giving tips on how to extend or help their children.  Homework club is not designed as an extra hour of school.

Parental Homework Questionnaire

I would also like to thank all the parents who have completed the  homework questionnaire in the past four weeks.  I thoroughly analyse your comments and give a half termly report to Miss Bezer.  Through your comments we can tell if the homework is too easy, too hard or just plain old boring.  We have amended our homework over the past year and we will continue to do so.

A note for Year 1 Parents
This half term our topic has been “Fruitastic”
Year1 Parents are invited to come into school to make fruit kebabs with their children on Friday 12th February at 2pm.  We look forward to seeing you all.

Have you lost anything in school?
Please check the Lost Property Box in the playground by next Wednesday.
The box will be emptied at 2.45 on Thursday.

Year 2 to 3 Transfer
Don’t forget that your forms need to be sent in by next Thursday 11th February. If you need any help completing the forms or have lost your form, please come in and speak to the office staff.

Year 1 assembly
Next Friday our Year 1s will be presenting their assembly and showcasing what they have been doing this term.  You will see their work on the local environment and hear all about “Fruitastic”.  Year 1 Parents don’t forget to come along and join in making the fruit kebabs on Friday between 2 – 3 p.m.

Signalong for Parents

On Friday the 6th of February, 1-3 pm all parents are invited to come along to attend an introductory course on Signalong. As some of you may know, we are a Signalong school and use it daily. Some of your children may have taught you signs they have learnt from school.
Signalong is a sign and speak system which empowers children who may have difficulties communicating. It reduces frustration and helps to develop language for all children, not just children who find it more difficult to express themselves. Please fill in the slip sent home to you and indicate if you would like to attend this session. 

Winter Coats
We have noticed that some children are arriving at school without their coats. Please make sure that your child is suitably dressed for outdoor play. Please make sure your child’s name is in their coat.

Outdoor PE
Children can now wear long, blue jogging bottoms for outdoor PE only.
They can wear their jogging bottoms to school ONLY on the days their class has outdoor PE. In the interest of your child’s safety, long jogging bottoms are not to be worn for indoor PE.

Christmas Post

We will be holding a MASSIVE book sale in Maths Week which begins on 16th November.  For this event we need your help, please send in any old books you have at home (children and adult) for us to have a table top sale.  You will be invited to come into the playground and buy any book you see, all proceeds will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Year 1 Parents

Book fair
The book fair is back and will be held in the school hall on Tuesday 24th until Monday 30th November. Opening time will be 3-3.30pm. by buying a book you are helping the school to buy more books for the classrooms and library.

Lilly, our lollipop lady
In sun, rain or snow Lilly our lollipop lady is always on duty at the corner of Dersingham Avenue and Church Road.  She has been our lollipop lady for 34 years and in that time has never had a day off.  This week she was awarded ‘Lollipop Lady of the Year’ and on Wednesday our children presented her with flowers to say a big ‘Thank you’ for being our lollipop lady.  So next time you cross the road, give Lilly a big smile and don’t forget to say THANK YOU.

LETS FIND OUT WORKSHOPS – 9th November 2 – 3 p.m.
Our next workshop will be all about music.  Come along and see just how easy it is to tap out a beat.  The workshop will be very practical, fun and Miss Penrose and Mr Smith will be showing you how we teach music in our school.  Come and see what fun the children have in the music after school club.

TARGETS

Dribblethon
Together we raised £85.00 for Dribblethon. All the money raised will be used to enrich the lives of children with life-limiting illnesses. Thank you very much for supporting this worthy cause.

Reception Parents
Something new in Reception from 8.40-8.50am, Monday to Thursday.

From Monday the 12th October reception classes will be opening their doors for parents to come into the classroom and spend time with their child.

During this time you will have time to choose a book with your child, look at their special book and look at work around the classroom.

Please note this is time to spend with your child. If you wish to speak to the class teacher about any concerns you may have about your child please make an appointment at a more convenient time.

School Dinner Taster Session (Tuesday)

Come in and have try out the school dinners.  You may be very surprised, they are not at all like when we were at school. 

On the menu will be:
Fish in korma rice with naan bread
Vegetable pasta (peppers, onions, mushroom)
Moroccan lamb and rice
Apple crumble and custard

Black History Month

The Month of October is Black History month. The children will be taking part in African Drumming Workshops, Storytelling Workshops, Soca Dancing and African Dance Workshops. We hope that the children will have a wonderful and memorable experience again this year.

LETS FIND OUT WORKSHOPS – 28th September 2 – 3 p.m.

Come along to our 1st ‘Lets find out’ workshop.  This week you can learn all about ‘Maths’.  The workshops will be very practical and fun and Mrs Heffernan will be showing you how we teach maths in school and how you can help your child at home.

After School Clubs

After school clubs start next Wednesday.  Please remember clubs finish at 4.00 p.m.  Money for the club (50p) must be sent into school on Wednesday morning.  You may pay for the whole term if you wish.  Last day for clubs this term will be Wednesday 25th November.

Parents Evening

Parents evening will be Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th October.  Please make an appointment to see your child’s teacher.  We are also having a food taster session, where you can have a little taste of some of the food that the children have at lunch time for their lunch.  Come along and see how schools dinners have changed.

Watch this space

We are going to be having a lending library for parents and children.  From Monday 5th October the school library will be open on a Monday and a Friday from 2.45 until 3.30 p.m.  Come along with your child and ‘borrow’ some books, but don’t forget to bring them back!

School dinners

As you know all children are now entitled to a free school dinner.  However, the school rule stills applies.  Your child must have school dinners or packed lunch for the whole week.  They cannot change mid week.

After School Clubs
Clubs for this term will run from the 30th September until the 25th November.
All clubs are on Wednesdays, starting at 3pm and finishing at 4pm.
As clubs are an extension of the school day, school rules still apply. Children who attend regularly will receive an achievement certificate at the end of the block to show their success.
There is a small charge of 50p per week for the club. If you would like your child to join a club, please return your booking form to child’s teacher. The closing date for returning the form is Monday 21st September.

Dribblethon
On Friday 25th September 2009. In the playground. At Dersingham Infant School
What is it?  A fun way to raise money to help children with life-limiting and complex healthcare conditions. Simply dribble a football for as long as you can and encourage your friends, family and work colleagues to sponsor you.
So please sponsor your child for Dribblethon and get the ball rolling.

Yellow Learning Intentions Cards
Please read the yellow cards titled ‘Learning Intentions’ to find out what your child is learning in school every week. Do talk to your child about what they are learning in school and please speak to your child’s teacher after school if you have any questions.
Remember – children do very well in school when parents and teachers work together.

FREE School Meals
From September 2009, Newham Council is providing free school lunches for every primary school child in the borough.
Some children still prefer to have a packed lunch or go home at lunchtime.
Please decide at the beginning of the week and tell your child to let the class teacher know what they wish to do. It would not be possible for your child to change part way through the week.

SUMMER CONCERT FOR RECEPTION, CLASS 4 & CLASS 5
Parents of children in Reception, Class 4 & Class 5 are invited to their children’s Summer Concert at 1.30pm in our school hall on Wednesday 15th July.

SUMMER CONCERT FOR CLASS 6, 7 AND YEAR 2
Parents of children in Class 6, Class 7 and Year 2 are invited to their children’s Summer Concert at 1.30pm in our School hall on Thursday 16th July.

We have had to split the performance this year due to our very small hall size and we hope that you will support us by attending the concert on the day your child’s class is performing. 

Play day for children and the whole family.
Pack a picnic and join friends of the Tunmarsh centre for a family play day and fundraising event on Saturday the 4th of July, from 11am-3pm at the Tunmarsh Cenre, Tunmarsh Lane, London E13 9NB. Admission is free. There will be a bouncy castle, workshops for children and lots more.

School Money Week – 29th June to 5th July, 2009

Next week we are having School Money Week. Our aim is to increase our pupil’s understanding of money, employment and earnings.

• Teachers will ‘pay’ 50p at registration time to every child arriving on time and being in correct uniform
• 20p will be ‘paid’ for good citizenship i.e. looking after a friend
• 20p will be ‘paid’ as they leave the lesson for good work and effort
• a further 20p will be paid for good behaviour in the lesson

Pupils will be rewarded with ‘wages’ (plastic/paper coins and replica notes) in a similar way to receiving earnings from employment.  Please encourage your child by asking them how much they ‘earned’ each day.
We aim to develop pupils’ understanding of the role of banks and each student will have to complete a running record of how much they earn.
Should your child be extremely helpful at home you are encouraged to send them in with a note saying how much they have earned and why (jobs and good deeds should earn 20p or 50p only).
The class earning the most money through the week will be awarded with a certificate in assembly the following Monday.

RAISING FUNDS FOR SCHOOL

We have been given the opportunity to raise funds for school.  All money raised will go towards buying environmentally friendly teaching products such as solar panels or mini wind turbines to teach your child about alternative power.
The first initiative is If you have an old mobile phone that you no longer use please send it into school with your child. This scheme is starting now and running for 6 weeks so get searching.  The only thing you must do is TAKE OUT THE SIM CARD.

The last day for returning the free school meals reply slip is Monday 22nd June.

Parents Meeting with Architects

Science week Family Challenge

Monday 8th June to Friday 12th June will be Science week within school. There will be lots of exciting activities happening during the week. On Thursday 11th June families are invited to attend the ‘Spaghetti Challenge’. If you and your family would like to take part in the challenge please fill out the form given to your child.

Meeting 16th June 2pm
The architects who are designing our new school have now drawn up the plans of what our new school will look like. We would like to invite you along to a meeting to share the plans with you and gather your comments.
The meeting will be at 2pm on 16th June, in the school hall. Please come along and see the plans and let us know what you think about the new school.

Breakfast Club for Dersingham Pupils
If your child needs to be in school for 8:40am while work or college starts only minutes later. You may find your mornings are a bit of a rush. This is why we are happy to let you know that Little Manor Play Project is considering offering a Breakfast Club for the children of Dersingham Infant School – giving you some extra time in the mornings.
The fully established Breakfast Club is based at the Froud Community Centre on Romford Road. The club welcomes children from 8:00am. We will give children a balance breakfast and walk them to school.
We are currently in a position to extend out Breakfast Club to the pupils of Dersingham Infant School. However, we can only do this if there is enough demand from parents and if enough children enrol.

Autism and Education
SPINN (Supporting Parents: Inclusion Network Newham) will run a workshop for parents of children on the Autistic Spectrum.
When: June 24th at 10.30 -12.30
Where: at Stratford Advice Arcade, 107-109,The Grove, E15 1HP.
The workshop will last about 2 hours, however this includes the opportunity to have coffee/tea and to chat to other parents.

As you know we are aiming for 95 % attendance each week at least.
For the second time running our Reception and Year 2 children have had more than 95%, well done parents and children.
Year 1 almost made it too. The attendance was 92.4% last week and it went up to 94.6% this week.

It’s that time of year again; the book fair is visiting our school! It arrives next Thursday 21st May and will be with us until after the half term Wednesday 3rd June. It will be open every day from 2.45pm to 3.15pm in the school library. Come and have a look at the wonderful books on offer, perfect presents for all the family. Look forward to seeing you there.

Disability Week – 1st to 5th June
Our aim for this week is to raise our children’s awareness and understanding of what it means to have a disability.  If you feel you would like to come and share any experiences you may have had on this topic, we would love to hear from you.  Please contact Miss Doherty.

Science Week – 8TH to 12th June
Don’t throw out your old newspapers, we need them for science week.
Also look out for the ‘science challenge’ information.  Come into school and work with your children on a science experiment.
