This is Me Overview

  • About Reception

At Dersingham Primary School the EYFS Framework is implemented through planned, purposeful play. Our aim is to ensure we provide a happy atmosphere where children are valued, where they have fun and where they thrive in all areas. We have a ‘child-centred’ approach recognising each child as a unique individual and we encourage meaningful play because this is how children learn in the early years.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through these seven areas of learning and development. These are divided into two areas; Prime areas and Specific areas.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:

    • Personal, Social and Emotional Development:
    • Communication and Language:
    • Physical Development:

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

The 4 specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children. They grow out of the prime areas and provide important contexts for learning. These are:

    • Literacy
    • Mathematics
    • Understanding the World
    • Expressive Arts and Design
  • Termly Overviews

Pets At Home Visit

As part of the ‘Under the Sea’ topic, Reception had the opportunity to visit Pets At Home, Ilford. The children practiced road safety on the journey, and travelled on 2 buses to get there. Whilst at Pets At Home, each Reception class purchased 4 fish, a snail and a crab for their class tank. The children and parents had lots of fun, and the children enjoyed exploring the different fish they could see in the tanks.

Police Visit

Reception’s ‘People Who Help Us’ topic was brought to life, when we had a visit from two local Police Officers. The Police Officers visited the children, and spoke about their jobs and some of the equipment they use when they are working, including handcuffs, batons and their Police Uniforms. Reception had the opportunity to ask questions and find out some more about what Police Officers do each day.

Celebrations

In Reception, the children have the opportunity to learn about different celebrations which occur throughout the year, and open up a discussion of what the children celebrate and what beliefs they may have. During child-initiated exploration, the children had the opportunity to explore different materials, fabrics, music and religious items, and speak about those which are familiar to them.
